What lorem ipsum is

Lorem ipsum is dummy text that printers and designers have used for centuries to fill a layout before the real words are ready. Because it looks like ordinary text but can’t be read, people judge the typeface, spacing and overall shape of a page instead of getting caught up in what it says.

It comes from a philosophical essay by Cicero written in 45 BC. The familiar opening, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, is a scrambled fragment of a sentence about pain: “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…”. The version used today was popularised by typesetting sheets in the 1960s and then by desktop publishing software.

Options

  • Paragraphs, sentences or words give you exactly the number you ask for. Words are returned as a single sentence, which is handy for buttons, headings and form fields.
  • Length changes how many words go in each sentence (about 4–8, 7–14 or 12–22) and how many sentences make a paragraph (2–3, 4–6 or 6–9). Lengths vary within each range so the text looks natural.
  • Plain English uses ordinary, neutral sentences instead of Latin. It shows realistic word lengths, line breaks and hyphenation, and reads naturally with a screen reader.
  • HTML wraps each paragraph in <p> tags. Markdown separates paragraphs with blank lines. Add headings and a list puts an <h2> heading before every second paragraph and a bulleted list after the second paragraph, so you can see how a full article looks.

When to use real text instead

Placeholder text is useful early on, but it can hide problems. Real content is often longer, uses unexpected words and needs headings that lorem ipsum never shows. Use realistic text, or the plain-English option, when you are testing:

  • forms, buttons and navigation, where the exact words decide whether people understand what to do;
  • layouts in other languages, since German and Finnish words are much longer and many scripts need more height;
  • accessibility, because screen readers read lorem ipsum aloud as nonsense;
  • anything shown to real users or clients, who may think the page is broken.

Limitations

  • The words are chosen at random, so occasionally a word repeats sooner than it would in real writing.
  • Word counts follow spaces: “hand-drawn” counts as one word, as it does in most word processors.
  • The plain-English text comes from a fixed set of sentences, so very long outputs will repeat some of them.

Frequently asked questions

Does lorem ipsum mean anything?

Not really. It began as a passage from Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum (“On the ends of good and evil”), written in 45 BC, but the words were cut up, shuffled and partly invented by early typesetters. “Lorem” is the second half of “dolorem” (pain). A Latin reader would recognise some words but find no sense in the sentences, which is exactly the point.

Can I use this text in my work?

Yes. Lorem ipsum is centuries old and not owned by anyone, and the plain-English sentences were written for NiftyKit for you to use freely. Just remember to replace placeholder text before you publish: search engines and readers both notice when it is left behind.

Why does the text change every time?

Each click of Generate again picks new random words, so repeated blocks don’t look identical in a layout. Only the opening sentence stays the same, if you keep that option on. Copy the text when you have a version you like.
